During conflict, gender-based violence (GBV) poses a significant threat to public health. In the Amhara region of Ethiopia, war has significantly affected the healthcare system, caused widespread displacement, and exposed women and girls to increased GBV. This mixed methods study found that health services in this region are not equipped to support women affected by violence.

Significant gaps were found at all levels of the health system in access to and provision of survivor-centred care. Barriers to accessing care include healthcare staff displayed harmful attitudes, skills gaps, adverse community norms, and insufficient facility infrastructure and guidelines. Urgent action is needed at the policy, facility, staff, and community levels to provide care for GBV survivors.

This snapshot contains key messages, findings, implications for humanitarian policymakers and practitioners and recommendations for further research.
