Ian Brightwell

Research Manager

Ian manages Elrha’s response to the Humanitarian Archive Emergency (HAE), in consortium with the University of Manchester and a wide-ranging coalition of organisations). The coalition aims to highlight and mitigate the loss of humanitarian archives, records and data and the resultant crisis for humanitarian learning and accountability.

Through nearly 20 years spanning humanitarian-development-peace, Ian’s career has focused on gender and protection in conflict. Working in UN Agencies, international NGOs and with national service providers, he has produced the sorts of humanitarian data and knowledge that now risk being lost, ranging from to community-based protection monitoring to rights-based advocacy with duty bearers.

Ian’s academic background is in history and peace studies. He has spent most of his career living and working in eastern Africa and southern and eastern Mediterranean countries.
