Congratulations on your successful Expression of Interest. This page is intended for applicants who have been invited to develop and submit a Full Proposal under our 2020 Call of the Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises (R2HC) programme. Please note that you can only submit a Full Proposal if your Expression of Interest was shortlisted. Please read the information and documents below carefully before developing your application. It provides information on the application process and the forms to be completed, along with important information for applicants. The deadline for the submission of the Full Application is 17:00 GMT on 29 March 2021. No extensions to this deadline will be granted, and applications submitted after this date will not be eligible for consideration for funding.

This provided general guidance about what the R2HC Funding Committee is looking for in a strong application and the resources and support available to you. [.slimline-cta-box][.slimline-cta_heading]Seed Funding[.slimline-cta_heading][.slimline-cta_paragraph]Up to £10,000 of Seed Funding is available to Open Research applicants who have been successful at the Expression of Interest stage to enable them to strengthen their research partnerships. If you indicated that you wished to be considered for a Seed Funding grant, you will need to provide some further details of your proposed activities by completing the below forms. Please note that applicants under the formative research stream are not eligible to apply for seed funding.[.slimline-cta_paragraph][.slimline-cta-box]

The completed forms should be returned to [email protected] by the 14 January 2021. Seed Funding is subject to due diligence and contracting by R2HC. Further details can be found on our Grantee Support page. Please note the following regarding Seed Funding:

  • All Seed Funding activities must be completed by 29 March 2021.
  • The grant is normally paid in arrears and on the satisfactory submission of a final report (see below).
  • Seed Funding is primarily aimed at allowing studies to convene an in-person meeting between the different research partners. Site visits and some preliminary data collection may also be permissible.
  • Seed Funding cannot be used for research activities, staff time / consultants to prepare the Full Proposal, overheads or other activities not directly related to the study.


If you receive a Seed Funding grant, you must provide a final report on the activities delivered by 30 April 2021 using the forms below.

Can the budget change at the Full Proposal stage?

Yes, changes to the budget are possible between Expression of Interest and Full Proposal stages.

Do I need to do anything differently as a Formative Research applicant?

Please complete the Formative proposal template. Your application will be assessed using the same criteria as the Open research stream. Formative applications do not need to identify a Research Uptake Focal Point within their study team.

Do we need to submit letters of support?

Yes. Letters of support from the partners are required at the Full Proposal stage.

How do I submit my Full Proposal?

All application must be submitted via our online platform, the Common Grants Application. The link to the Full Proposal will be available on this page by 11th January 2021.

How much can I ask for & what type of costs will the funding cover?

Applicants may request support for personnel costs, travel, data collection and analysis, reasonable equipment purchases, and other items to cover the full research costs in the relevant setting. The R2HC will not generally pay for the costs of interventions, except in limited cases where a small trial pilot is needed.

What happens once I submit my Full Proposal?

Each Full Proposal will be reviewed by our external Technical Experts. A rebuttal stage will allow you to respond to the Technical Reviewer\'s comments and questions. Our Funding Committee will then review each application in detail and final decisions will be made during a Funding Committee meeting held in June 2021.

What is the duration of the funding?

For proposals submitted in our Open research stream grants can be for a maximum duration of up to 36 months (24 months for Formative research), during which research and uptake activities can take place.

When will I get a decision?

Applicants will be informed of decisions by early June 2021. We anticipate successful studies starting from August 2021 onwards.

Where can I find a draft copy of the contract?

We recommend that you share a copy of the draft contract with your relevant legal / contracts team. A copy and further information regarding our due diligence process can be found here.

Whose CV do you require?

You must provide a CV for each member of the research team using the template provided.

R2HC Uptake and impact small grants

Elrha’s Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises programme aims to improve health outcomes for people affected by humanitarian crises by strengthening the evidence base for public health interventions. Since 2013, we have funded more than 100 research studies.
