Research Snapshot: Strengthening access to comprehensive abortion care in conflict-affected settings

Comprehensive abortion care (CAC) in Ethiopia’s humanitarian settings is limited in both accessibility and quality, despite a demonstrated need for tailored, stigma-free and respectful care models. This mixed methods study aimed to evaluate access to and the quality of CAC in conflict-affected Amhara, Ethiopia, and identify barriers, opportunities, and policy solutions for its sustainable implementation.
Findings showed that integrating midwife-led abortion care into a responsive, patient-centered health system can enhance service delivery. However, attention is needed to ensure quality of care, and investments in health system capacity may be required to meet high needs for women and girls affected by the conflict.
This snapshot contains key messages, findings, implications for humanitarian policymakers and practitioners and recommendations for further research.
