J-PAL at The Paris School of Economics received funding from the HIF to scale their innovation Unite for a Better Life (UBL). UBL is a curriculum developed to prevent and reduce intimate partner violence and HIV using 16 skills building sessions delivered by trained facilitators to women, men or couples. Sessions address gender, healthy sexuality, conflict resolution, household task-sharing, substance use, & sexual harassment. The project uses ‘tea talks’ a cultural ceremony where women provide tea for the men, to model more equitable gender norms.

This guide was created to support implementation of Unite for a Better Life. The guide provides an overview of the Unite for a Better Life programme and its components for programme implementers working in gender-based violence prevention and/or in humanitarian settings.

The document describes the fundamental components of the programme as it has been adapted for use in the humanitarian contexts of refugee camps, in Dollo Ado, Ethiopia.
