Strengthening Health Systems to Reduce Mortality in Venezuelan Migrants

Project overview

This project aims to improve healthcare access for Venezuelan migrants in Colombia. It involves workshops for healthcare providers in Bogotá to address stigma and discrimination, enhance understanding of migrant health regulations, and create a supportive environment. A downloadable resource guide and a Meta campaign will further educate both healthcare providers and migrants on their rights and responsibilities within the Colombian health system. These combined efforts are expected to increase healthcare access for Venezuelan migrants in Colombia.

This research is crucial because it can empower both healthcare providers and migrants. By addressing stigma and improving understanding of migrant rights, we hope to create a more just and equitable healthcare system for all.

Purpose

By May 2025, resource documents on healthcare services will be produced and shared during workshops in Colombian hospitals. July 2025 will see the implementation of workshops across four Bogotá hospitals, utilising case studies to address stigma and discrimination within the healthcare system. Focus group discussions will be conducted following these workshops to gather insights on discriminatory practices.

By August 2025, downloadable documents outlining migrant health rights and healthcare access procedures will be made available. A Meta campaign (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) will be launched in July 2025, aiming to provide migrants with crucial information about navigating the Colombian healthcare system. This multi-faceted approach aims to enhance both healthcare provider knowledge and migrant awareness, ultimately improving healthcare access for Venezuelan migrants in Colombia

Expected outcomes

This initiative aims to enhance research impact related to migrant pathways and reduce stigma and discrimination. Key objectives include:

  • Developing shared values, vision, and goals for research impact within this domain.
  • Improving healthcare providers' understanding of migrant pathways and addressing discrimination and stigma.
  • Translating research evidence into practical products for humanitarian practitioners, ensuring their usability and comprehension.
  • Tailoring research communications to specific audiences, including migrants themselves, to improve understanding of their rights and access to healthcare services.
  • Prioritising research that directly benefits people affected by crises, while ensuring effective dissemination of findings and their practical application.

By focusing on these objectives, this initiative strives to bridge the gap between research and practice, ultimately improving the lives of migrant populations and fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.
