Shaping the future: Our strategy for research and innovation in humanitarian response.
CARE finalised the selection processes in March 2013 and Systems Solutions and Development Technologies Ltd. (SSDTL) were shortlisted to supply the digital device which would be installed in 300 fishing trawlers. This device will enable tracking of fishing trawlers which are beyond 100km from the coast, will receive early warning messages and also transmit SOS signals when necessary. Once CARE receives official approval from the NGO Bureau to begin implementation of the project, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with SSDTL. The latter will be responsible of supplying and installing the digital device and will also provide technical and maintenance support as necessary.
Three hundred fishing trawlers, collectively used by approximately 3,000 vulnerable fishermen, have been identified and selected by CARE through a transparent and participatory process. The selection criteria was formulated and collectively agreed between the key stakeholders including members of the fishing community in the targetted project area. The list is currently pending clearance from the Fisheries Department officials and the Chairman of the Fishing Trawlers Owners Association in the operational area.
