Shaping the future: Our strategy for research and innovation in humanitarian response.
Why is an innovative incinerator needed?
In the acute stages of humanitarian emergencies such as floods, epidemics and conflicts there is a rapid demand for health facilities and therefore medical waste management. Initially small-scale incinerators are constructed, often from oil drums and other easily accessible resources, to deal with burnable medical waste but these are usually inefficient and poor performing. Humanitarian workers also construct more durable incinerators but they are frequently constrained by a lack of trained staff and appropriate materials. Therefore concerns remain over, disinfection capacity, volume reduction, operation and maintenance, sustainability and environmental pollution.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking a design concept for a simple, efficient and durable incinerator that is safe to operate and affordable in low-middle income countries. It can be a light weight design that is easy to transport and assemble, or a simple design that can be built on-site using local skills and materials. This is a theoretical challenge that requires only a written proposal of 10 pages.
What are we offering?
This is an opportunity to change the way that humanitarian assistance is delivered on the ground. Three promising designs that meet our criteria will be awarded $5,000. In addition, there is a further $15,000 prize available for a design that is ready to be developed into a prototype and be tested in collaboration with our partner humanitarian agencies.
