Save the Children UK
Save the Children have a range of opportunities open to those interested in the humanitarian sector.
- The Child Protection Trainee Scheme (CPTS) offers a unique opportunity to gain practical child protection experience in international humanitarian programmes. The CPTS is a mix of structured workshops, self-motivated learning and two five-month field placements with either a Save the Children Alliance member or another key international child protection agency. During each placement, trainees work alongside an experienced child protection professional who acts as their Coach to guide and support them and to facilitate their learning process. Trainees are paid just under £11,000 for year, plus international flights, emergency medical insurance and accommodation costs. For the 2009-10 cycle, there were over 800 applications for just 8 places.
- The Humanitarian Leadership Development Project (HLDP) is a 12-month programme focused on bringing new leadership talent into the humanitarian sector. The HLDP is based around two programme streams: international (with London as the hub) and national/regional (with Nairobi as the hub). For the international stream, the programme starts with a 6-month placement in the London headquarters of various charities (For example Save the Children, Christian Aid, Merlin, CARE). Not only are trainees fully involved in the work of the team, they also complete intensive training on the Emergency Operations Programme. For the second 6 months participants are deployed to an emergency field placement where they work with a coach to develop their practical experience. For the 2011 cycle, there were 394 applications for 13 places.
- The Logistics Skills Development Project (LSDP) follows a similar structure to the HSDP, but focuses on developing logisticians. For both the HSDP and the LSDP, expenses are paid whilst participants are in London, and living allowances of £500/month are offered during the overseas placement. For the 2009-2010 cycle, there were about 40 placements for 3 places.
- The Health Internship Programme is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international health programmes. This one year scheme is designed to enable participants to develop the necessary skills to launch a career in global health with Save the Children.
Interns will follow a short orientation programme in the Save the Children London office before undertaking a ten-month placement in a country programme. Interns will work alongside health professionals and will receive coaching to facilitate the development of the skills required to manage health programme work. Interns are provided with an internship allowance of £10,794 pa (gross) and a package that includes flights, accommodation and emergency medical cover.
