Sex and Age Matter: Improving Humanitarian Response in Emergencies

Humanitarian aid is largely guided by anecdotes rather than evidence. Currently, the humanitarian system shows significant weaknesses in data collection, analysis and response in all stages of a crisis or emergency. As a result, the present humanitarian system is much less evidence-driven than it should be and than it would like to be.

Children and especially teenagers have a important role to play in both, though too often they are seen as nothing more than victims in disasters. Experience shows that children can be the very best advocates to encourage governments to focus attention on those most vulnerable in society.

NEW! HIF Resource Centre

The Humanitarian Innovation Fund has created a new resource centre to support innovators in the humanitarian sector.

This cattle place allows Pastoralists and their children to stay close to the police station for security after clashes between different factions within the Dinka tribes, Rumbek, Southern Sudan.
