Dr. Chesmal Siriwardhana
Published on 24/04/2017
It is with sadness we inform our R2HC community that Dr Chesmal Siriwardhana died unexpectedly on Sunday April 9. Chesmal held the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and, until November last year, was Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Anglia Ruskin University.
He was the Principal Investigator of the R2HC research grant addressing Post-research ethics analysis: A tool for ethical reflection and sharing lessons-learnt from health research in humanitarian crises, which was approved for funding in 2016. Chesmal had also recently updated the R2HC Research Ethics Tool, with Donal O’Mathuna, which is due to launch soon. He also supported some of Humanitarian Innovation Fund’s projects on ethical issues related to humanitarian innovation.
We had hoped to work with Chesmal for many years to come so it is with deep regret we learned of his passing. Chesmal was a rising star in the research ethics field, a pleasure to work with and will be sorely missed both as a funded grant lead and professional colleague. We would like to express our condolences to Chesmal’s family and friends.
