Translators without Borders’ Words of Relief is ready to become a self-sustaining service for aid organizations; the diffusion grant is intended to highlight our impact, outline our innovations and flexible approaches, package these services to support our short and long-term fundraising and partnerships, and market these services broadly.
WHAT HUMANITARIAN NEED IS BEING ADDRESSED?
Far too often, the affected populations in a crisis do not understand responders in time of crisis. Translators without Borders’ impact and comprehension studies demonstrate that providing people information in a second or third language they may report knowing does not necessarily have much impact. Providing people simple and accessible information in a language they truly know and use regularly is much more effective. Words of Relief is designed to lessen the gap in understanding and comprehension between responders and affected populations.
WHAT IS THE INNOVATIVE SOLUTION AND HOW WILL IT IMPROVE EXISTING HUMANITARIAN PRACTICE?
The Translators without Borders team is now well staffed to service crisis work and reach out broadly to aid organizations and foundations to ensure long-term funding of Words of Relief, and deliver quality services. Words of Relief is the innovation. The diffusion grant allows TWB to hire a development specialist with strong marketing skills, working directly with the deputy director to build and market the packages. We will kick off our outreach program the week of the World Humanitarian Summit and to continue through conferences and in-person meetings through early September. The goal is solid, ongoing funding to sustain a core Words of Relief team long term.
We will create a Words of Relief package for potential partners and funders. We will fully define the Words of Relief tools for organizations who are looking for better language solutions during crisis, and we will package it professionally. We will market the packages broadly in person and virtually; we will increase number of users of these services in five months; triple in 9 months; details below.
