David brings over 20 years experience working across the world in development and disaster risk reduction. He has held senior posts in the NGO and academic sectors, leading teams and programmes, developing strategies and undertaking training, research and consultancy. He has been a member of several NGO advisory boards and has published a number of articles and papers concerning urban livelihoods and disaster risk reduction.
From 1994-98 David was Project Manager at the Oxford Centre for Disaster Studies. Between 1998-2006 he worked for the NGO CARE International UK, firstly as Senior Technical and Policy Advisor and Head of the Policy Unit (1998-02), and subsequently for four years as Regional Manager for Southern and West Africa, based in South Africa.
From 2006-13 David was Director of the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) at Oxford Brookes University. He was conferred Professor in 2010, and in 2013-14 spent a year as Visiting Professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design teaching a new class on urban disaster.
David is currently a Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. He also teaches regular courses in Switzerland, Madrid and the USA, and is a Visiting Professor at Université Paris-Est Créteil, France.
